The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Davji Bhimji Atellah has revealed that medics providing critical emergency care to injured anti-Finance Bill protesters were brutally attacked by the police.
Davji, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, said that the police violence towards those who were there to provide help to the injured was inhumane.
He further stated that the medical emergency response centres both in Crescent and Holy Family Basilica were tear-gassed by the police.
“Medical personnel, who were on the ground to provide critical emergency care, were also attacked. This act of aggression against those who were there to help the injured is appalling and inhumane,” Davji said.
“Both the Crescent and Holy Family Basilica were tear-gassed and brutally assaulted while attending to gunshot emergencies. Even the speakers for the demonstration were vandalized by the police.”

The Secretary-General disclosed that several peaceful protesters succumbed to gunshot wounds on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
“Yesterday, Kenyans came together to peacefully protest against the contentious finance bill 2024. We are deeply saddened and appalled by the government’s brutal response to its people. Several lives were tragically lost as a result of live bullets and ammunition fired by the authorities,” Davji said.
“These Kenyans were exercising their democratic right to protest and now their families are left to mourn their untimely and unnecessary deaths.”
Calling the government for accountability, Davji stated that KMPDU stands in solidarity with the peaceful demonstrators adding that the State should protect those exercising their democratic rights.

“This violence is UNACCEPTABLE! We do not condone the government’s actions and call for accountability. Our stance is firm: we always stand for peaceful demonstrations and the right to voice our concerns without fear of violence, as enshrined in our constitution,” Davji said.
“We cannot go back on all the strides Kenya has made to achieve what Kenyans rightfully deserve. We demand justice for those whose lives were lost and protection for all who stand up for their rights.”
