Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege has urged Deputy President William Ruto to rein in leaders affiliated to him, who have “formed the habit of insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta”.

Speaking at the Mumbi Stadium in Murang’a Town on Friday, January 31, Sabina Chege said the DP’s team should let President Kenyatta run his government without “much political side-shows and unnecessary power struggle”.

“Deputy President [William Ruto], I respect you a lot, and you know that I am your friend. But, let me request you — humbly — to rein in the leaders who walk around with you. They always insult the president every time they speak in public. I beseech you to ask your allies to refrain from insulting the president. When 2022 comes, you can politick the much you want. But for now, we are asking DP Ruto allies to desist [from baseless politicking],” said Sabina Chege, who had attended an event to honour at least 10, 000 graduates from 67 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres in Murang’a. The graduates were sponsored by the Murang’a County Government.

In an interview with NTV on January 24, DP Ruto said many a time he has asked the leaders affiliated to him to stop making remarks that appear to antagonise President Kenyatta. The DP, however, said he could only warn too much, observing that the leaders allied to him “have their own minds, and were elected in their own rights”.

Sabina Chege belongs to the Jubilee faction known as Kieleweke that supports President Kenyatta’s ideology.

Leaders, who are vocal about their support for William Ruto, include: MPs Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), Rigathi Gachagua (Mathira), Alice Wahome (Kandara), John Kiarie (Dagoretti South), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), among others. Senators who have openly declared their approval of Ruto’s school of thought include: Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Samson Cherargei (Nandi), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo-Marakwet), among others.
