Popular comedian and content creator Awinja has come out to condemn the arrest of Grace Njoki Mulei, the woman who hogged headlines after storming SHA offices during a live presser on January 15, 2025.
On Friday, January 24, 2025, Kenyans woke up to the news of the arrest of Mulei with the incident taking place at a hospital adding a fresh twist to the whole saga.
Taking to her X page Awinja, whose official name is Jacky Vike condemned the incident.
Awinja, in her sentiment, termed it as not wanting to be told the truth on the part of those involved.
“Hampendi kuambiwa ukweli and it shows!!!! #FreeGraceMulei #EndAbductionsKE,” Awinja who appended an #EndabductionsKE hashtag said.
The arrest comes just days after Mulei and other citizens held a protest at the Ministry of Health on January 15, 2025, demanding accountability and reforms in the Social Health Authority (SHA), which has been pestered with allegations of delays, corruption and inefficiency.
While confirming the arrest, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Grace Mulei’s would be charged with causing disturbance.
“ARREST OF A SUSPECT FOR CREATING DISTURBANCE A suspect has been arrested following reports of a disturbance at the Ministry of Health Boardroom at the Capital Hill Police Station. The suspect, Grace Njoki Mulei, was tracked down to Hombe Road, off Juja Road, and successfully apprehended. She has been taken to Capital Hill Police Station, where she will remain in custody until her court appearance scheduled for tomorrow,” DCI said.
The directorate also revealed that they will arraign her in court on Friday, January 24, 2025.
The manner of Muei’s arrest has sparked outrage among human rights groups and professional bodies.
In a joint statement, the Kenya Medical Association, Law Society of Kenya, Police Reforms Working Group, Amnesty International Kenya, and others condemned the arrest as a gross violation of Mulei’s rights.
The rights group observed that Mulei’s arrest could set a dangerous precedent of denying people exercising their constitutional rights to picket and demand accountability.
