Chief Justice Martha Koome has lamented the delayed reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after swearing in the chairperson and commissioners.

In a statement on Friday, July 11, 2025, Koome decried the roadblocks witnessed in the reconstitution of the IEBC, stating that the delays had affected the nation’s democracy.

“It is unfortunate that the process of recruiting the new chairperson and commissioners has been protracted. The previous Commission’s term ended over two years ago, creating a leadership vacuum that hindered the Commission’s ability to fulfil its constitutional mandate,” Koome stated.

Begin preparations for 2027

She urged the commission to hit the ground running ahead of the 2027 general elections and the pending by-elections that have taken years to conduct, leaving thousands of populations without representation.

“Several critical processes were stalled, posing risks to the health of our democracy. Now that the Commission has been reconstituted, I urge you to move with speed to discharge the pending constitutional and administrative tasks and to begin timely preparations for the 2027 General Elections,” Koome stated.

Erastus Edung Ethekon was sworn in as the chairperson of the IEBC alongside six other members of the commission after the courts cleared a case that had stalled the process of appointing the commission.

Voter registration

Wiper Party leader has also called on the IEBC to speed up the registration of young voters and to come up with a new voter register to be used for the 2027 general election.

Speaking on Friday, July 11, 2025, during the burial of a mask hawker, Boniface Kariuki, in Murang’a County, Kalonzo said that the commission must now expedite the registration of voters and the updating of the voter register.

“Today, the new commission of the IEBC has been sworn in, and we want to see that the commission proves that it is not a Ruto commission, even though we believe it is his commission.  Even if Ruto himself is the chairman of the IEBC, we shall send him home,” Kalonzo said.

“With the IEBC commission now in place, we want to see an urgent recruitment of voters, we want to see a new voter register, and the Gen Z voters should be expeditiously registered as voters.”
