Chief Inspector David Karuri Maina, who tragically lost his arms during the Occupy Parliament protests, has opened up about the profound impact of the incident on his life.

In a recent interview done on June 20, 2024, at Nairobi West Hospital where he is receiving treatment, Maina, while reflecting on the harrowing experience said he was uncertain about how he would cope with life.

Further, the Chief Inspector described the day of the protest as profoundly sad and acknowledged that the situation had irrevocably altered the course of his life.

As the primary breadwinner for his family, the Chief Inspector faces the daunting challenge of not only coping with his own physical and emotional recovery but also grappling with the uncertainty of how to communicate the gravity of the situation to his children.

“It was a sad day, that this happened as we were keeping calm in Nairobi. This one has changed my life a lot because there are so many things that I will not be able to do as I was doing. I do not know what I will tell my kids about this, I know they will be very shocked,” Maina shared.

Maina and another officer were seriously injured after a teargas canister exploded on them in Nairobi.

As a result of Maina’s failure to prevent the release of a detonated canister during the protests, he lost two hands in the process.

In addition, another female officer was seriously injured after a teargas canister exploded.

Maina was among the officers deployed to contain the protestors when he detonated the teargas canister outside Kencom opposite International Life House.

CS Mutua on Finance Bill 2024

Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua weighed in on the protest after his visit to Miana who got injured as a result of Tuesday’s protests. Mutua emphasized that proper legislative procedures were followed and that all contentious clauses were amended based on public feedback.

“The Finance Bill has been reviewed thoroughly, and all demands from stakeholders have been addressed. Taking to the streets is uncalled for since these demands have been met,” Mutua said.

Additionally, the CS emphasized the importance of the youth accepting the country’s economic challenges, which require difficult, but important decisions, such as taxation.

While acknowledging that taxes are unpopular, he wondered what alternatives those demonstrating and demanding the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 had to offer.
