Paul Kibaara Gaitho, a chief from Uthiru location in the Kabete Constituency in Kiambu County, has begged Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for the reinstatement of corporal punishment in schools nationwide to curtail the rising cases of misbehaviour by the youth.

Speaking during the Jukwaa La Usalama Kiambu Chapter on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the visibly concerned chief stated that Gen Zs are one of the laziest and most undisciplined generations.

“Sir, mine is a challenge, a very quick one on service delivery. The challenge came with a person I don’t know who he is, who removed corporal punishment in schools.

“Because currently, at the moment we are hearing ‘WanTam,’ we are hearing Gen Zs. If you are interacting with these people, you will find they are lazy.

“They smoke a lot of bhang; they are idlers. They tend to see as if they are in heaven,” Gaitho lamented.

Discipline restoration

The chief insisted that without discipline, young people would never appreciate the principle of hard work.

“Even according to God’s principles, one has to eat from his sweat. One has to work, without sweat, you won’t get it. Gen Zs do not want to hear that.

“The reinstatement of corporal punishment will help in service delivery,” he argued.

Gaitho further decried that today’s youth lacked proper guidance, and neither schools nor homes could instil discipline effectively under the current legal framework.

“Nowadays, we are dealing with funny kids because in schools, they aren’t being canned. Even at home, no neighbour can dare touch them,” he said.

Chief Gaitho’s view on Gen Zs

The administrator painted a grim picture of youth indulgence in illicit activities, saying their behaviour was already undermining productivity.

“In my place of work, what they do is jumping from one chang’aa den to another,” Gaitho added.

His passionate appeal comes at a time when debates about youth culture, protests, and discipline have dominated public discourse.

While some leaders have cautioned against branding Gen Zs as lazy, others like Chief Gaitho believe stricter measures are needed to steer them back to the right path.

The Interior CS is yet to respond to the chief’s proposal.
