Cate Waruguru condemns arrest of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji
Former Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has condemned the arrest of Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji.
Mukunji was arrested in connection with the Saba Saba demonstrations.
Taking to her official Facebook account on Monday, July 7, 2025, Waruguru said that the youthful MP was arrested without any evidence, adding that no political witch hunt would silence the voice of the people of Manyatta and Embu County.
“Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has been arrested and taken to an unknown location, a deeply disturbing violation of democratic principles and human rights,” Waruguru condemned.

“Goons who have hijacked his car in an attempt to display Hon Mukunji engagement with them. No false evidence. No Evil framework shall silence the voice of the people of Manyatta & Embu.”

Police on Mukunji’s arrest
Waruguru’s statement comes after the National Police Service (NPS) officially confirmed the arrest of Mukunji.
In a statement, the police stated that the MP was among the individuals apprehended during the Sabasaba protests.
“Additionally, a number of suspects have been arrested, including Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” the National Police Service statement reads.
In addition to the arrest, the NPS also provided an update on the Saba Saba protests, acknowledging that while the majority of Kenyans conducted themselves peacefully, several individuals engaged in criminal acts. These included attacks on law enforcement officers, looting, and destruction of property.
“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to update the public following today’s protests, dubbed ‘Sabasaba’. NPS commends the majority of Kenyans for being law-abiding and heeding the call to maintain law and order,” the National Police Service statement reads.
Demand for his release
Apart from the former woman representative, residents of Manyatta Constituency in Embu County are also demanding the immediate release of Mukunji.
Addressing the media in Embu Town, a section of concerned locals led by Juma Kalimoni condemned what they termed as a politically motivated arrest, saying the MP was being punished for championing the voice of the people.
“We demand the immediate release of our MP. He has committed no crime. This is pure political intimidation, and we shall not rest until he is free,” declared Kalimoni, warning of mass protests if the MP is not released.
The residents claimed that Mukunji’s arrest was a deliberate move to silence dissenting voices and frustrate his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race in Embu.
