Babu Owino secures release of 200 petty offenders from prison after becoming an advocate

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino assisted in the release of at least 200 petty offenders from prisons around Nairobi.
In a statement on Saturday, May 24, 2025, Owino, who was admitted to the bar as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya on Friday, May 23, 2025, revealed that most of the offenders were imprisoned after they failed to pay fines and cash bail.
“Nothing can be more fulfilling to my soul than to deploy all my skills and capacities in the service of my fellow citizens. Today (Friday), upon my admission to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, I undertook my maiden assignment by going to Nairobi Prison to secure the release of people incarcerated for petty offences such as traffic offences, consuming illicit brews, drunk and disorderly, et al.,” Owino said.
Noble course
Owino noted that he was embarking on such noble courses following his confirmation as a bona fide advocate of the High Court alongside 608 others on Friday, May 23, 2025.
“Most of them have been in custody for failure to pay fines or pay bail or to provide security for bond. Through my professional representation as an advocate, I secured the release of more than 200 persons,” he stated.

“For now, I just want to do God’s work by standing up for His children here in Kenya in servant political leadership and in the pursuit of formal justice.”
Urges responsible behaviour
Owino also advised the released individuals to integrate back into society by finding meaningful work to do, urging them to provide for their families.
“I want to assure them that as a member of parliament and as an advocate of the High Court, it is my responsibility to fight for the downtrodden. I have cleared all their fines, and they will be happy to join their family members,” he said.

“I want to advise them that as they go back to society, they should remember that it is the responsibility of a man to work and provide for the family.”
The firebrand MP enrolled for a degree in law in 2013 at the University of Nairobi after completing his first actuarial science degree from the institution and emerging top of his class in 2012.
“I would like to thank the MP for securing my release. I was imprisoned for gambling and was unable to pay a Ksh5,000 fine imposed. I have served two weeks of my three-month sentence,” Malone Muraguri Wanjiku said on Friday, May 23, 2025.
