Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has been admitted to the roll of advocates alongside 609 other lawyers who are now advocates of the High Court of Kenya.

Babu, who revealed that he is pursuing four degree courses in 2023, has completed the law programme he enrolled on in 2013, immediately after getting a first-class honours in actuarial science degree from the University of Nairobi in 2012.

The other degrees he revealed at the time that he was pursuing were a Master’s in architectural science and a Master’s in Law (LLM).

Reminisces hardship

In a statement on Friday, May 23, 2025, Owino reminisced about the hardship he grew up with in the sprawling Nyalenda slums of Kisumu, where his mother was an illicit brew seller.

“Growing up in the slums of Nyalenda, I noticed with deep concern the constant harassment and humiliation of ordinary Kenyans in the brutal hands of law enforcement agencies, most of the time without a clue of what their constitutional rights were,” Owino remarked.

“My mother got arrested severally and instead of being arraigned in court would be beaten up by police to pay a bribe from her meagre chang’aa sales proceeds,” he noted.

“This has pushed me over the years to study and appreciate the laws of Kenya and their role in safeguarding justice, both procedural and substantive.”

Justice for Kenyans

The youthful leader equally observed that with the new feather in his cap, he would be more skilful in fighting for justice for Kenyans.

“This achievement is not about personal grandiosity. It is about sharpening the tools of service. The law is now a new battlefield where I will fight even harder for justice, equity, and the rights of the common mwananchi,” Owino states.

“The Government should brace itself for more lethal arguments in defence of Kenyans—both in Parliament and now in court. Expect legal action aimed at lowering the cost of living, creating jobs, and holding systems accountable.”

In a previous interview, Owino revealed that his family members sacrificed their ambitions to get him through school, and he had done them proud by getting many accolades.

He equally indicated that he was a blue-eyed boy from the get-go, and had held leadership roles right from primary school to the university student union.

“The reason why I am in leadership is because I always asked God to give me an opportunity, should he remove me from the slums, in return I would help his people,” Owino said.
