Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili Owino, better known as Babu Owino, has revealed why he chose to study law and become an Advocate of the High Court.

Babu Owino, in a candid conversation with Oga Obinna on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, explained that the reason he had studied law was to stand with the less privileged, adding that being admitted to the bar had always been his goal.

Owino further disclosed that when he was growing up, police officers used to harass people in their homes, arrest them in the house, beat them, and intimidate them. As a result, he explained, he felt compelled to pursue a field of study that would empower him to assist those facing similar injustices.

He added that he found that discipline in law, and that is why he chose to study law.

“Being admitted to the bar is what I have always wanted. The reason why I studied law is for the downtrodden, it is for the less privileged in the community, it is for those who do not have, and it is for the people who are down,” he disclosed.

“Because when I was being raised up police officers used to harass people in our house, arrest people in the house, and beat people in the house, and therefore I also needed a course that could help me help those who are facing similar challenges. And I found it in law; that is why I did law.”

“And that is why I went to Thika Law Courts to help those who were arrested during maandamano, that is why I went to Kahawa Law Courts to help those who were charged with terrorism; and that is why I went to Milimani Law Courts to help those who were charged with maandamano and those who were charged with terrorism,” Owino added.

” I am the Gen Z advocate, and for any other person who cannot afford the services of an advocate, I am here. I will do it for free, I will do it pro bono, mine is about service, leadership is about the people.”

Admitted

The vocal MP was admitted to the roll of advocates alongside 609 other lawyers who are now advocates of the High Court of Kenya on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Babu, who revealed that he is pursuing four degree courses in 2023, has completed the law programme he enrolled on in 2013, immediately after getting a first-class honours in actuarial science degree from the University of Nairobi in 2012.

The other degrees he revealed at the time that he was pursuing were a Master’s in architectural science and a Master’s in Law (LLM).

Immediately after his admission, Babu Owino pledged to deliver legal services on a pro bono basis for many Kenyans who cannot afford representation. He has committed to ensuring that the underprivileged, many like his own family, who lacked legal access, will be represented without charge
