The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday, July 18, said former presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot is free to push for Constitutional change after he met the one million signatures threshold required by law to legally trigger the process.
In a statement to newsrooms, IEBC said Aukot’s Thirdway Alliance Kenya Party managed to get valid 1.2 million signatures from Kenyans supporting outfit’s “Punguza Mzigo” initiative.
“Punguza Mzigo” initiative seeks to reduce the burden of cost of governance on taxpayers.
IEBC said Aukot’s team on February 28, 2019 shared with the Commission a draft Constitutional Amendment Bill.
The draft Bill will be submitted to each of the 47 County Assemblies for consideration within three months from the date of submission by IEBC.
“Thereafter, the Speakers of the respective County Assemblies will submit the decisions of their respective County Assemblies to the Speakers of the National Asembly and the Senate pursuant to Article 257(6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” read the statement whose undersigned is IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati.
