Makadara Member of Parliament (MP) George Aladwa has declared that he will be seeking the Nairobi Governor seat on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

Speaking with confidence to the press on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Aladwa said that anyone who wants to contest for the governor’s seat in Nairobi must come through ODM.

He insisted that he is prepared to join the race and believes he has what it takes to lead the capital.

“Ule yoyote anataka kiti ya gavana, akuje kwa ODM. Na mimi pia, nakaa kwa hiyo kiti ya gavana kwa ODM. Kwa hivyo kama kuna mtu anataka kusimama, tukutane kwa debe. Kwa hivyo pia mimi nimesema… Mimi pia si nimetosha?” Aladwa declared.

He added that although some people may not agree with everything he says, leadership requires courage and the ability to serve without expecting approval from everyone.

“Najua kuna wengine hawawezi kupenda mambo nimesema lakini huwezi kupendwa na kila mtu. Lazima kazi ianze,” he added.

Aladwa’s declaration

Aladwa’s declaration now positions him as one of the key figures to watch as the 2027 election approaches. His entry into the race could spark a competitive battle within ODM, as other leaders may also express interest in the ticket.

The Nairobi governor’s seat has historically been hotly contested, and Aladwa’s move shows that ODM wants to take an early lead in preparing for the contest.

The governor’s position is seen as strategic for any party that wants to maintain influence in the capital, which remains Kenya’s political and economic hub.

Aladwa was among the leaders who attended a meeting convened by ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, during the impeachment talks of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Addressing the press after the closed-door meeting, Aladwa said the dialogue had yielded a unanimous decision to temporarily put the impeachment on hold, allowing Sakaja space to address concerns raised by the assembly.

For now, Aladwa has made his ambitions clear: that Nairobi’s top seat belongs to ODM, and he is ready to face anyone at the ballot.
