Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has stated that a high percentage of Kenyans are satisfied with the services offered by police officers.
While addressing members of the National Police Service (NPS) on Monday, July 5, Matiang’i revealed that the journey to reform the service is a slow one but which will come to pass.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day. It will take courage and unprejudiced citizen review of police officers to realize our ultimate goal of a fully professional, responsive, and accountable NPS,” Matiang’i said.
The CS was speaking at an event at the Kenya School of Government where he was flanked by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho and other senior police officers.
According to Matiang’i, there’s an encouraging indicator that Kenya is steadily marching towards police reforms, with 63% of Kenyans reporting that they’re satisfied with services offered by police.
“This is an increase of 29% since 2009 based on the Police Service Delivery Performance Survey 2021,” Matiang’i added.
The CS further told Kenyans that IG Mutyambai has taken over the case where police officers in Kisii allegedly beat up Kenyans.
“Following complaints raised by wananchi regarding the conduct of some of our officers at the Rioma Police Station, IG Mutyambai has already taken up the case. Those found culpable will have to bear individual responsibility,” Matiang’i said.
