Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has addressed public concerns over allegations of corruption and fraud in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment process, assuring Kenyans that the ministry is committed to transparency and accountability.

Speaking about the matter, on Monday, October 13, 2025, during the official launch of KDF 2025 recruitment, Tuya said the Ministry of Defence is aware of the issues raised by members of the public regarding past recruitment exercises.

The CS had earlier warned against corruption in the upcoming recruitment.

She confirmed that reports of corruption, fraud, and exploitation of young people and their families by impostors had been received in previous years.

“Equally, the Ministry of Defence is fully aware of the concerns emanating from the wider public regarding the challenges that have marred past recruitment exercises. Allegations of corruption, fraud and the exploitation of young people and their families by impostors have been reported in the past. All the reported cases, I am happy to say, have been thoroughly investigated, and those found culpable have been dealt with in accordance with the law,” Tuya stated.

Most cases involved impostors, not KDF officers

Tuya clarified that investigations into past incidents had shown that the majority of the reported cases did not involve genuine KDF officers. Instead, the scams were orchestrated by individuals pretending to be KDF members or senior officials.

“Notably, past investigations have revealed that most of the reported cases did not involve members of the Kenya Defence Forces but were perpetrated by individuals passing off as KDF leaders or members,” the CS said.

The recruitment will enlist the services of general service officers, specialist officers, tradespeople and KDC constables.

The Defence Ministry has since strengthened its systems to prevent such incidents in future and to protect job-seeking youth from falling victim to conmen posing as recruiters. Tuya urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious recruitment activities directly to official KDF offices.

She also warned that the ministry would take firm legal action against anyone found attempting to exploit the recruitment process for personal gain. The CS added that the Ministry of Defence will continue to enhance public awareness and provide clear communication about official recruitment procedures to avoid confusion and manipulation.

She assured Kenyans that the government remains committed to fairness, professionalism, and integrity in every KDF recruitment exercise. “The Ministry of Defence is determined to protect Kenyans,” She stated.
