11 suspected members of the Mombasa Republican Council were on Friday arrested by police at the Maweni area in Likoni, Mombasa.

The 11 males, aged between 36-50 years, were arrested by police officers from Likoni Police Station following a tip-off from members of the public.

Police seized several MRC ID cards and flag.

Likoni Police Division DCI Richard Koywer confirmed the arrest and said the suspects will be held at port cells awaiting their arraignment on Monday.

The 11 will be charged with holding an illegal assembly and failing to observe Covid-19 rules.

MRC spokesperson, Randu Nzai, however, denied that the 11 were being initiated into the group.

MRC is a separatist group advocating for the independence of Mombasa through separation from the rest of Kenya.

The group is facing accusations of having links to the Al Shabaab, a terrorist group. However, they have always denied links to the group.

In December 2020, 100 people were arrested over claims they were taking an oath to join the MRC group. 90 of them were women.
