1 arrested for vandalising SGR structures in Makindu

The National Police Service has arrested a person of interest following vandalism along the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line in Makindu, Makueni County.

The operation comes after a Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) train driver reported seeing two men damaging the SGR’s outer perimeter near Kiboko.

Speaking on Friday, August 22, 2025, via X, the National Police Service confirmed that officers discovered over ten concrete poles had been smashed and metal rods stolen from the railway line.

“Upon attending the scene, our team traced one of the suspects to his residence, where portions of the stolen metal rods were recovered,” the post read.

Authorities said the person of interest was promptly arrested, while efforts to apprehend the second individual are ongoing.

The police warned that any attempts to tamper with critical infrastructure would be met with strict legal action.

“We take the protection of our national infrastructure seriously. Acts of vandalism will be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law,” police stated.

Commitment to safety

The National Police Service urged the public to report any suspicious activity along railway lines to prevent further destruction and ensure the safety of both cargo and passenger operations.

“We appeal to members of the public to remain vigilant and support security efforts along all railway lines,” the post added.

Officers emphasised that safeguarding infrastructure is a collective responsibility and called for the community’s cooperation in protecting the SGR from future threats.

Police noted that the arrested person is currently in custody, and investigations continue. Authorities reassured Kenyans that measures are being enhanced to secure railway assets and prevent similar incidents.

“Our investigation is ongoing, and anyone found involved in vandalism will face prosecution under the law,” the statement read.
