DCI rules out foul play in Jirongo’s case after 7 Climax bus passengers recorded statements

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has ruled out foul play in the death of former Cabinet minister and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo following comprehensive investigations into a road traffic incident that occurred along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 5, 2026, the DCI has stated that detectives launched immediate investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death, deploying a multidisciplinary team comprising homicide detectives, crime intelligence experts, and forensic specialists from the National Forensic Laboratory.
According to the DCI, the investigative team processed the scene, secured and preserved critical exhibits, and documented physical evidence.
Further, CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station near the scene was recovered and subjected to forensic analysis.
Investigators also obtained the bus manifest, amateur video footage recorded at the scene, and other relevant materials to aid the inquiry.
As part of the probe, statements were recorded from several key witnesses, including Jirongo’s widow, Ann Lanoi Pertet, who was the first family member contacted after the incident.
“Furthermore, the investigative team recorded statements from several key witnesses, including Ann Lanoi Pertet, the deceased’s wife and the first family member contacted after the incident; Tiras Kamau Githinji, the driver of the ill-fated bus; Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi, the bus conductor; and staff members from Eagol petrol station,” DCI stated.
The DCI also confirmed that several leaders who had interacted with the late Jirongo hours before the incident, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Rebman Malala, and Ibrahim Sambuli, voluntarily recorded statements to help piece together the deceased’s last movements.
“Further, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, and their statements were also recorded,” DCI added.
To add to that, the DCI revealed that detectives further obtained a statement from Julius Kiprotich Chelule, the driver of an alleged rescue bus with registration number KCU 573A.
“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed so far, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI stated.
The agency added that once the remaining investigative processes are concluded, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further directions, including possible criminal charges against the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) driver, depending on the evidence.
The DCI extended its condolences to the family, relatives, and friends of Cyrus Jirongo and urged the public and political leaders to refrain from speculative statements that could compromise the investigation or cause public anxiety.
Further, members of the public with information related to the case were encouraged to report anonymously through the DCI’s toll-free lines.
