Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga clashed with Thirdway Alliance Party leader Ekuru Aukot after he made unsubstantiated allegations about Raila Odinga.

Aukot took to Twitter on Monday, August 8, 2022, and announced that he will not vote for a candidate who has been endorsed by the current administration.

The Thirdway Alliance Party leader further claimed that his vote would help save Kenya from being dominated politically by two families.

“Tomorrow I will cast my vote. You can be sure it won’t be for a candidate being pushed by current administration. It’s an opportunity to turn a new chapter in the political history of our country. After almost 60 yrs of dominance by two families, their end comes tomorrow,” he tweeted.

Mutunga slammed Aukut in a quick rejoinder, terming his last statement as false. The former Chief Justice posed several questions that the Thirdway Alliance Party chose not to respond to.

“Your last sentence is false. Do you have any idea who has dominated Kenya for the last 60 years? Which foreign and local interests? And why two families in Kenya when it’s a class of 8300billionaires whose assets equal the assets of the rest of us?” Mutunga responded to Aukot’s tweet.

Ekuru Aukot opposed to Raila’s candidacy

TheThirdway Alliance Party leader on June 5, 2022, wrote the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) seeking to have Raila barred from running.

Aukot argued that The Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance was a corporate entity and hence shouldn’t be allowed to field a Presidential candidate under the current laws.

He further alleged that Raila was state-sponsored to an extent of being advertised on the government website that is hosted using state resources.

“The candidate is state-sponsored and several Cabinet Secretaries that include and not limited to CS Joseph Mucheru (Ministry of ICT Innovation & Youth Affairs), CS Peter Munya (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperatives), CS Dr Fred Matiang’i (Ministry of Interior & National coordination of National Government) and PS Kibicho (Ministry of Interior) have been blatantly campaigning for the Azimio La Umoja Candidate,” said Aukot.

Aukot’s onslaught on Raila came shortly after IEBC disqualified him from the presidential race for failing to provide copies of the identity cards of his supporters.

He ran for president in 2017 and garnered 27,311 votes. In the October 26, 2017 repeat presidential elections, Aukot got 21,333 votes countrywide.
