A survey conducted by market research company TIFA has painted a grim picture of the employment situation in Kenya.
TIFA on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, released the report of the survey that was conducted between June 23, 2023, and June 30, 2023, by means of Computer-Assisted-Telephonic-Interviews (CATI) with some 1,500 respondents.
The survey topics concentrated on the state of the economy as experienced and perceived by Kenyans. It also covered aspects of the recently passed 2023-24 Budget including the Finance Bill that the President signed into law on June 26, 2023.
On matters employment, TIFA survey reported that only 11 per cent of Kenyans have full-time jobs.
The report also shows that nearly one-third of Kenyans (31 per cent) who are now jobless have never been employed before.
Income groupings
According to the survey, the vast majority of Kenyans survive on extremely modest incomes with only three per cent of the employed workforce earning over Ksh50,000 per month.
12 per cent of respondents said they earn a monthly salary of not more than Ksh5,000 with the same percentage saying they earn between Ksh5,000 to Ksh10,000.
13 per cent of the respondents said they earn Ksh10,000 to Ksh20,000 a month while 10 per cent of the case study said they earned Ksh20,000 to Ksh50,000.
Savings
The survey also indicated that Kenyans save their money for a variety of reasons with the three most common being general saving/investment, unexpected/emergency needs (16%), and education costs.
