A 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a criminal gang allegedly using panga and other crude weapons on members of the public in Mombasa, police have confirmed.

In a statement, the teenager was nabbed yesterday in Majaoni after the area chief reported spotting the gang notorious for mugging and demanding money from locals that were fully armed to police officers at Kiembeni Police station.

The minor is currently in custody awaiting to be arraigned as police launch a manhunt for the rest of the suspects who escaped arrest.

Police have assured Mombasa residents of safety as they continue to probe the incident.

“The National Police Service has intensified patrols in the region to ensure the safety of the public.

“We, however, encourage the public, particularly the youth, to desist from being involved in any criminal activities,” part of the statement by NPS read.
