President Ruto in his remarks during the national prayer breakfast said he has been summoned by the men’s conference.
President Ruto hinted it could have had something to do with the fact that he held his wife, Rachel’s hand during his last visit to the US.
“It’s true that I have been summoned by the men’s conference for holding Rachel Ruto’s hand in the US,” President Ruto said.
President William Ruto said this while he was leading the country on Thursday, May 30, 2024, in marking the 21st National Prayer Breakfast at the Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi.
President Ruto was responding to his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, who had said that going to the US and holding the first lady’s hand, had put many Kenyans under pressure, including himself.
According to the Second in Command, Ruto’s gesture of holding the hand of First Lady Rachel Ruto during his US State Visit was an inspiration to Pastor Dorcas who asked Gachagua to do the same.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua further disclosed that Pastor Dorcas went overboard, asking him to hold her hand even inside the house.
“Kenyans are very proud of how you (President Ruto) represented us in the United States, kizungu ilikuwa sawa kabisa; you put Kenya on the map. When you held the hand of the first lady, you created a lot of problems for many men in the country including Musalia Mudavadi and I,” Gachagua added.
As a way to break the ice, Gachagua promised to show his wife equal love if the two went to the US together.
“Pastor Dorcas, I assure you that when the president sends me to the United States, I will hold your hand, but when we are back, please let us return to our lives,” Rigathi stated.
Prayer Breakfast
Interdenominational prayers have always been held at the prayer breakfast, and key speakers use the platform to emphasize the importance of national unity and reconciliation among leaders.
Prayer breakfasts date back 78 years to the Second World War when a group from the U.S Congress gathered for prayers during the global war. The prayer breakfast tradition spread to Africa with Kenya hosting its first one in 1986.
This year’s theme of the Prayer breakfast was ‘Hope’.
