President-elect William Ruto has addressed concerns that he will deport Chinese who are in the retail business as promised during his campaign.
Ruto was forced to shed light on the issue of the Chinese business community in Kenya while speaking during an interview with CNN on Wednesday evening September 7, 2022.
The Kenya Kwanza Alliance (KKA) leader noted that his sentiments during the campaigns in regard to deporting Chinese who are the retail business were taken out of context.
The President-elect promised that every business person in Kenya will work freely regardless of their nationalities.
Ruto nevertheless insisted that foreigners operating their businesses outside the law will be shipped back from wherever they came from.
“Everybody will do business, everybody will do whatever they want to do so long as they are doing it within the law. Anybody that operates outside the law, it does not matter where they come from, they will be sent back from where they came from,” Ruto said.
Ruto vowed to protect local business people
The President-elect while attending Kenya Kwanza Nairobi Economic Forum at Ngong Racecourse on June 21, 2022, said he would not allow the Chinese to engage in the retail business and other small businesses like roasting maize while Kenyans are struggling with unemployment.
“Let that not worry you. Those are Kenyan businesses and for those engaged in such business, we have enough airplanes to deport them back to where they came from. We have agreements with different countries on what level of business or work is to be done by locals and which one is allowed, where one must have a work permit, to foreigners. And that level is not selling in kiosks, retail or roasting maize,” Ruto said.
