President William Ruto on Friday, May 31, 2024, condoled with Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda who lost his mother, Agnetta Okello.

In a statement, President Ruto recognised the contributions that the senator’s mother had made during her lifetime, adding that she had impacted lives throughout her career in education.

“Mama Agnetta was a distinguished teacher, a lover of education and a dedicated lady whose mentorship has shaped the lives of many people,” the statement read in part.

Mama Agnetta, locally referred to as Nyargi Omieri died on Friday and left a legacy of impacting many students’ lives during her time as a teacher in Gem.

The senator lost his mother at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu where she was seeking treatment.

The Kisumu senator has been a major ally of President Ruto in the Luo-Nyanza counties, an issue that led to his expulsion by Raila Odinga’s ODM party in 2023.

The senator would, however, fight back the party’s decision to throw him out, and even asked for the minutes of the meeting in which the decision to throw him out was reached.

A ruling by the political parties dispute tribunal chairperson Desma Nungo granted conservatory orders staying ODM’s decision to expel the five politicians from the party.

“That in the interim and pending the hearing and determination of the application, this
Honourable Tribunal hereby issues interim conservatory orders staying the implementation of the decision of to expel and remove the names of the five politicians as a member of the ODM Party,” ordered Nungo.

He vowed to soldier on in his allegiance to the UDA-led government, stating that development could only come to Kisumu through alignment with the ruling administration.

The other ODM leaders that were expelled alongside Ojienda were Suba South MP Omondi Caroli, Langata’s Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o, Gem’s Elisha Odhiambo, Bondo’s Gideon Ochanda and lately Uriri MP Mark Nyamita.

ODM accuses the leaders of going against the party’s position on certain issues and also questions their loyalty to the party leader Raila Odinga.
