Police formally begin criminal investigations into Sakaja’s certificates

The National Police Service (NPS) has launched investigations to ascertain the authenticity of Johnson Sakaja’s academic certificates and supporting documentation.

Nairobi gubernatorial candidate has had a tough time as he fights to clear his name following allegations that he forged his degree certificate.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has taken cognizance of the ongoing debate in the public domain on allegations on the genuineness of university academic certificates and supporting documentation presented to IEBC for clearance by some aspirants for political seats in the forthcoming General Elections,” NIP said in part in a letter dated June 18, 2022.

Police investigating Sakaja and Ndeti

NIP said they were launching an investigation to determine the authenticity of academic certificates presented by Sakaja and Machakos gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti.

“Owing to the constitutional and legal mandate bestowed upon it, the NPS has commenced criminal investigations into the genuineness of the certificates presented for clearance to the IEBC by two political aspirants, namely Hon Johnson Sakaja and Hon Wavinya Ndeti, both gubernatorial aspirants for Nairobi and Machakos counties respectively, and determine if any offence has been committed,” NPS said.

NIP further indicated that the Inspector General had directed DCI boss George Kinoti to conduct a speedy investigation into Sakaja and Ndeti’s academic certificates.

“Consequently, the Inspector General of the NPS has directed the Director, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conduct speedy investigations into the authenticity and genuineness of all the certificates, testimonials, and respective documentation presented to IEBC for clearance by the two aforesaid aspirants to logical conclusions.”
