Not fit for State House! Ruto playfully calls out Sakaja’s dressing style

President William Ruto made light remarks about Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s attire during an official event at State House, saying leaders should dress in a way that reflects the seriousness of such occasions.

He spoke while addressing guests at the Agreement for Modern Arena and Entertainment District on Friday, April 10, 2026.

He said he noticed how some leaders were dressed, including the Governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, and questioned whether they were aware of the nature of the event. Ruto explained that the occasion was important and required a more formal approach.

“Looking at the people who have come to this occasion, including the governor of Nairobi, I was asking myself whether they are here by design,” President William Ruto said.

Ruto said the way some leaders were dressed made it seem like they did not know they were attending a State House function. He explained that official events should reflect a certain level of seriousness in both conduct and appearance.

“The way they are dressed, they don’t look like they knew they were coming to State House,” President William Ruto said.

Formal dressing at official events

President William Ruto said he may consider stricter measures in future to ensure that those attending official functions meet expected standards. He explained that the dress code is part of showing respect to the office and the purpose of the meeting.

“And I think next time I will ask the people at the gate not to allow people dressed like…” President William Ruto said.

He said the comment was directed especially at those attending serious functions, where presentation matters. Ruto explained that such events are planned carefully and should be treated with the importance they deserve.

“Especially if they are coming to a serious function like this,” President William Ruto said.

Ruto added that the manner of dressing should match the weight of the occasion.

“The manner of dressing of these people has no indication about the seriousness of this occasion,” President William Ruto said.

He said the government takes such events seriously and expects the same from those invited.

“We take this occasion very seriously,” President William Ruto said.
