Residents of Munyange village in Othaya are living in fear after they discovered a body of a 70-year-old man believed to have been mauled by a hyena.

According to residents, the body of Douglas Macharia Kariuki, who was mentally unstable, was found by a bodaboda rider lying by the roadside with some of his body parts missing.

“It was around 6:00 am when a bodaboda rider was alerted of the incident, and we found the body, which was badly mutilated. Some of his internal organs were missing. The eyes and the head were also open,” Paul Gitonga, a resident, said.

Another resident said that they suspect that a hyena mauled him.

They now fear for their school-going children who go to school in the wee hours.

“It is risky for our young children who have to go to school early in the morning because the animal is still roaming in the village. We are not safe anymore,” he said.

They are now urging the Kenya Wildlife Service officers to hunt down the animal and kill it.

The deceased’s body was collected by police officers and taken to the Mwai Kibaki Hospital mortuary in Othaya.
