Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested a man after receiving a Ksh1.5 million bribe from an applicant seeking the position of South Nyanza Sugar Company (Sony) CEO.
The man, Mark Kipruto Kuto, claimed to have been sent by a principal secretary to collect the bribe on his behalf to assist the applicant secure the job.
The applicant reported the matter to EACC, who arrested him at Nairobi’s central business district (CBD) shortly after he had received the amount.
“The Commission yesterday arrested Mark Kipruto Kuto who had requested and received a bribe of Kes. 1.5 million from the complainant claiming that he had been sent by a Principal Secretary, as an inducement to assist the complainant secure the position of Chief Executive Officer of South Nyanza Sugar Company, advertised on 5th December 2023,” EACC said while confirming the arrest.
“The complainant reported the matter to EACC and upon investigation, the suspect was arrested within the CBD after pocketing the cash.”
The suspect spent the night at Kilimani Police Station before being transferred to EACC Police Station to facilitate investigations on the matter.
This comes moments after EACC confirmed the arrest of Kilifi assistant county commissioner Teddy Buya Bonaye accused of stealing relief food.
Bonaye is accused of stealing and selling the humanitarian food assistance valued at Ksh550,200.
The food aid was meant for needy residents in the Tana North sub-county within Tana River County.
“The Commission has this morning arrested one Teddy Buya Bonaya, the Assistant County Commissioner 1, Ganze Sub-County, in Kilifi County, who stole and sold relief food valued at Kes 550,200 meant for needy residents,” EACC said.
Teddy will be arraigned in court on Thursday, February 31, 2023.
