Mackenzie’s aide dies after one week of hunger strike

Shakahola cult leader Paul Mackenzie has lost one of his aides who was being held in custody.

Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda was on Tuesday, June 21, 2023, informed of the aide’s death by Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel Yamina Jamii.

Jamii told the court that Mackenzie’s aide, identified as Joseph Juma Buyuka, died two days ago while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The prosecutor added that Buyuka died as a result of a hunger strike and self-imposed starvation.

“He is believed to have died as a result of a hunger strike and self-imposed starvation.”

Jamii additionally told the court that Mackenzie’s aide declined to eat and drink while being held in Malindi GK Prison.

“The aide had declined to eat and drink while being held at Malindi GK prison. He died two days ago this is the new development that the court should be made aware of,” Jamii said.

The prosecutor disclosed that Mackenzie’s aide died at Malindi Hospital after being rushed there from Malindi GK Prison where he was being held.

He added that the State was awaiting an autopsy report to determine the cause of his death.

“The State is waiting for the postmortem to be conducted on his body to ascertain the cause of death,” Jamii told the court.

Jamii further informed the court that two more suspects were critically ill and were receiving treatment in the hospital.
