Kenyan dancehall singer Kimani Karuga, popularly known as KRG The Don, has hit back at claims that his absence from social media was largely due to him having run broke.

Speaking during an interview with YouTuber Trudy Kitui on Monday, April 7, 2025, the singer expressed his disbelief at the meanings people had been attempting to assign to his absence online and categorically stated that he had not gone broke as some had suggested.

According to him, he had simply decided to seek peace and step away for a while, also mentioning that he was feeling emotionally drained by other commitments, particularly his responsibilities as a father.

“For those who said he called me. That’s just talk. Me? I’m okay. I’m just busy with other things; those are their stories. There are many things in my world. I will reveal some things to the public, but don’t forget that I’m a father and there are many things I’m taking care of,” he said.

However, KRG revealed that he is now planning to return to social media and shared that his comeback will also involve changing certain aspects of how he operates.

He encouraged his fans, who had been messaging him and asking for new hits, to relax, wondering whether they had already exhausted the songs he had uploaded to YouTube before he took his break.

“A few things will change, of course, when I come back, including my mode of business and music. Fans have been urging me to return. For now, things will heat up even more, and I will take them even further. Those saying I’m not around, they can go and check out my songs on YouTube before I release new ones. Since you want me back on social media, I will come back,” he explained.

Life away

Further, the ‘Mambo Imechemka’ hitmaker clarified that netizens should not assume that he had been missing out on much since he decided to quit social media.

He explained that, in fact, he had been in a much better place because he had discovered the immense peace that comes from being away from it.

He stated that he had simply channelled his energy elsewhere and came to the realisation that he had, in fact, been carrying Kenya’s entire entertainment industry because many artistes were unable to push their careers during his absence.

“I didn’t miss anything, and I’m peaceful being offline. The industry – I didn’t know I was carrying it alone, and people were saying it’s me they were waiting for. I was just pushing my energy. If they feel they don’t want to continue without me, I will come back and do some entertainment. My friends have access to me, and we link up – it’s only that we don’t record and post. I came to realise some of these artists depend on my energy. This time they should prepare, but if you haven’t been strong while I’ve been offline, it will be hard. Now I’m coming back with a bang, but with a different pattern. Not for a group of people,” he said.

Witchcraft

The singer, who hails himself as ‘Bughaa’, made his silent exit from social media in August 2024, just days after he accused his baby mama of having bewitched him.

In an Instagram post, he lashed out at people who were urging him not to take legal action against his baby mama, saying he would not suffer in silence because of anyone.

“Since I exposed the name of the witch, I have received so many calls from friends and well-wishers asking me to protect the person, saying she’s the mother of my children. My question is, when she goes to witch doctors, does she remember I’m the father of the children?” he shared on his Instagram stories.

“Who could take care of my kids? We all know what she does for a living. You want to tell me my kids will be raised with money from the club’s immoral dealings?” He further posed.

The dancehall singer, who even brought a priest to purify his house, lamented that his baby mama had been spiritually attacking him since 2015, lamenting that she had sought the help of a witch to ruin his life.

According to KRG, his baby mama was envious of him, and he wondered why she was not asking the witch she had hired to help her get rich instead of trying to deplete his wealth.

“From 2015 till now, do you think you can handle spiritual wars? God is not human. He blesses those who are fit to be blessed, not those with impure souls. Instead of trying to curse me, why don’t you ask your witch doctor to curse you so you can make your own money?” he said. “Why do you want to destroy mine when mine helps many people who are vulnerable and respectful?”

“My life has always been in danger since 2015. Do you think I’ve kept it in for this long? Do you know how awkward it is to eat in a restaurant when you could be eating at home? It feels like sleeping at the studio when you have a big bed at home. Trust me, I protected her enough. Now I will not keep quiet and perish like other men,” he said, adding that he will only protect his wife and children, who are the only people he will need in the future.
