Kenyan singer Kimani Karuga, popularly known as KRG The Don, has shared his thoughts on why, despite having been a staunch supporter of President William Ruto, he still missed out on being awarded a state job following recent appointments made by the Head of State.

Speaking in an interview with YouTuber Trudy Kitui on Monday, April 7, 2025, the dancehall artiste shared that he could not clearly state why he was overlooked and acknowledged that it was true many of his fans had been pushing on social media for the President to appoint him.

KRG shared that, however, he was still hopeful he would land such a job in the future and confidently stated that he knows very well he possesses certain skills that the majority of people do not have—something that makes him sure he would excel in such a role.

“Yeah, of course, many people expected me to be given some position, but you know the president is the boss—he’s the one who assesses and sees who’s capable. Perhaps my name hasn’t reached the list yet, but in case he gives me the chance to serve the public and I get that capacity, I don’t mind. I know I can do a lot better in such a job.”

MP seat

Further, KRG revealed that he has his eyes set on vying for a Member of Parliament seat come 2027, although he declined to disclose details of the constituency he intends to contest in just yet.

He gave his reasons, saying he had decided to go that route because he understood that politics requires one to do some background work by going underground to meet the locals of the region one wishes to represent and shared that he was confident because he had already done that groundwork.

However, he insisted that he was yet to launch into active politics and linked that with his social media hiatus—which has had fans buzzing—saying he would address things further once he makes a major comeback.

“I want to run for MP, but for now, I haven’t started active politics. Politics takes a lot of stamina, and besides that, it demands that you be on the ground and understand what people are going through. I’ve taken the time to learn those things, and I’m ready.”

Social media exit

The ‘Mambo Imechemka’ crooner also used the interview to defend himself from claims that had been circulating online, suggesting he had shelved social media because he had gone broke.

The singer expressed his disbelief at the conclusions people had tried to draw from his online absence and categorically stated that he had not run out of money, as some had speculated.

According to him, he had simply chosen to seek peace and take a step back for a while, mentioning that he had been feeling emotionally drained due to other responsibilities—particularly those linked to being a father.

“For those who said he called me, that’s just idle talk. Me? I’m okay. I’m just busy with other things; those are their stories. There’s a lot going on in my world. I’ll reveal some of it to the public, but people shouldn’t forget I’m a father and I’m handling a lot.”

However, KRG revealed that he is now planning to return to social media and shared that his comeback would involve changing certain aspects of how he operates.

He encouraged his fans, who have been messaging him and asking for new hits, to be patient—wondering aloud whether they had already exhausted the songs he uploaded to YouTube before he took his break.

“A few things will change, of course, when I come back, including how I handle business and music. Fans have been urging me to return. For now, things are going to get even hotter, and I’ll take it up a notch. As for those saying I’ve disappeared, they can go to YouTube and enjoy my existing songs before I drop new ones. Since you all want me back online, I’m coming.”

Meeting with Ruto

The singer, in December 2024, surprised his fans after meeting President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, in a special invitation that had also been extended to political commentator Cassypool.

In a clip shared by Cassypool from the event on December 19, 2024, the two, dressed in debonair-looking suits, appeared to be having the time of their lives as they spent time with the president and engaged him in discussions on various matters.

At the time, KRG—who had just emerged from the public firing line for his silence over the controversial Finance Bill 2024—used the golden moment to clap back at Kenyans who had been speaking ill of the president.

He insisted that the president genuinely loved Kenyans and claimed that those who were criticising him sounded as though they were bewitched.

“Those people are speaking as if they are bewitched. The president loves you, and he’ll work for you as promised,” he said.
Furthermore, he defended the meeting by stating that their discussions had revolved around ways to uplift Kenyan youth, insisting that both he and the self-proclaimed ‘chawa wa Rais’, Cassypool, had raised youth issues to Ruto appropriately.

“Never take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from. We came to pay a visit to our president, William Ruto. As usual, we raised issues concerning the youth and the need for mentorship,” KRG wrote on Instagram.
