Kenya Railways has announced a temporary suspension of train services along the Syokimau and Lukenya routes, citing a volatile security situation.
In a statement on Thursday, Kenya Railways said there have been a series of attacks on their trains passing through Mukuru kwa Njenga, where rowdy individuals have been obstructing rail tracks and pelting the trains with stones.
“We wish to inform our customers and the general public that we have suspended train services along the Syokimau and Lukenya route,” Kenya Railways said in a statement seen by K24 Digital.
“This is due to the volatile security situation arising from consistent attacks on our trains passing through Mukuru kwa Njenga, by rowdy individuals who are barricading rail tracks and stoning the train.”
The gravity of the situation was underscored by two recent incidents. On Wednesday evening, the Lukenya bound train was targeted in an attack at 6:00 pm, followed by another assault Thursday at 11:00 am, when a train carrying 520 pupils was stoned.
“We wish to reiterate that the safety of our passengers remains paramount to us,” Kenya Railways affirmed.
“Normal services will resume as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize to all our esteemed customers for the inconvenience caused.”
Kenya Railways has assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the security situation promptly, collaborating closely with relevant authorities and law enforcement agencies.
The railway team says it will closely monitor the developments and provide updates regarding the resumption of train services along the affected route.
Passengers and commuters who rely on the Syokimau and Lukenya train services have been encouraged to seek alternative transportation options during the temporary suspension.
Kenya Railways also urged the public to remain patient and understanding while the necessary security measures are implemented to restore safe and reliable train operations.
