Kenya Power issued a notice informing Kenyans of power interruptions in select parts of the country.

The utility firm, in a statement, said there would be a scheduled outage from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, in parts of five counties.

Six counties, however, have been affected by an eight-hour power outage. They include; Nairobi, Kiambu, Makueni, Murang’a, Mombasa and Nyeri.

Kenya Power said the power outage in parts of Nyeri would start from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. while the rest of the other five counties will experience a blackout from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The utility firm further noted that parts of Kirinyaga County will be affected by a seven-hour outage, beginning from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nationwide power outage

The latest outage announcement by Kenya Power just days after a recent nationwide blackout caused a storm prompting the National Assembly Energy Committee to summon Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir and Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror.

The committee chaired by Mwala Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Musyoka, also expressed disappointment with how the incident affected the country’s main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and termed the incident as embarrassing.

The power outage witnessed across the country paralysed activities. Kenya Power quickly addressed the matter and attributed the power outage to a system disturbance.

The Friday, August 25, 2023, power outage lasted for about 14 hours in what Kenyans called the longest blackout in memory.
