Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza has dismissed claims that her husband Murega Baichu had been contracted to perform during her swearing-in ceremony held on Friday, August 26.

Through her social media page, Kawira while refuting the claims as mere lies, she sought to clarify that she had no hand in the ceremony as she only took over the leadership after being sworn in.

She says since he did not perform, he was not paid by the county before jokingly saying she will buy him a gift after earning her first salary.

“Clarification on lies being peddled by our political competitors. I only assumed office after being sworn in. So there is no way I could have initiated or approved any payment. The inauguration ceremony was budgeted for by Transition Committee chaired by the outgoing Meru County secretary and Meru County Commissioner representing The National Government.

“My husband Murega Baichu was not contracted for performance nor was he paid even a single shilling. But when I receive my first month’s salary nitamnunulia zawadi,” she added.

Kawira took over the Meru county throne on an independent ticket after flooring veteran and incumbent Kiraitu Murungi and outgoing Senator Mithika Linturi, becoming the first woman to hold the seat in the county.

She initially served as a Woman representative after defeating Florence Kajuju in 2017. She was vying as an independent candidate.

Kawira is also a bishop at Baite Family Fellowship Church in Meru County.

She has since joined William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza.
