Inua Jamii beneficiaries will soon start collecting their Ksh2,000 monthly stipends from their local M-Pesa agents.
This is according to President William Ruto who revealed ongoing plans with Safaricom while speaking at Uhuru Gardens during Jamhuri Day celebrations on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
“Inua Jamii programme has had challenges with the beneficiaries travelling long distances and spending considerable portions of their stipend on logistics. Working with Safaricom, we have structured a new delivery mechanism for beneficiaries to receive their stipends from MPESA agents in their localities,” President Ruto noted.
Notably, a section of beneficiaries had appealed to the government to channel the funds via mobile phones citing safety concerns.
For November, the government released Ksh2,095,360,000 for the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Program and another Ksh6,118,000 for those enrolled in the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE), programme.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection said payment would commence on December 4 to beneficiaries currently on payroll.
“The funds were credited to the accounts of 1,044,621 Inua Jamii beneficiaries, with each receiving Ksh2,000 for November,” part of the statement reads.
Since its inception in 2015 by President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Inua Jamii program has been targeting orphans and vulnerable children; older persons, and persons with severe disabilities.
The current regime adopted the program in July 2023 after a directive by President William Ruto.
