Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed how his teacher impacted his performance during the 2022 deputy presidential debate.

Speaking during the funeral service of the late Julius Kano, his former high school teacher, the DP expressed that the departed teacher contributed tremendously to his performance in the debate by engaging him in how to appropriately present himself.

He went on to state that Kano motivated him to give his best shot despite frequent negative hearsay from a section of Kenyans and his competitors.

Mwalimu alinipigia asubuhi akaniambia, ‘I taught you debate, tonight don’t let me down.’ Nikajua hapa lazima nijaribu. Nilifika pale watu walikua wananidharau sana, hawa watu wa social media, magazeti, ati ooh sijui kusoma, sijui kuvaa ooh kingereza nini nini, nikanyamaza tu…nikajipanga vizuri. Mwalimu akanipigia tena akaniambia anaamini nitashinda hii debate,

Nikafika pale walikua wanafikiria sijui kizungu nikaporomosha, nilikalia Martha ngumu kwa sababu ya huyo mwalimu. We have nothing to say because pahali alitutoa we are not able to give good account, so one of this days when I write my story he will have a chapter,” he added.

Earlier, the DP hailed the late Julius Kano Ndumbi as a gifted teacher and disciplinarian who moulded, mentored and prepared him for the future during his school days at Kianyaga Boys High School.

The DP celebrated the departed teacher as a gentle giant who relentlessly strived to deliver nothing but the best for his students, he also acknowledged that his efforts have created an impact that remains a legacy in various sectors.

“I am what I am today, because of Mwalimu Julius Kano Ndumbi. Mwalimu Ndumbi was a gifted teacher, a disciplinarian, who moulded, mentored and prepared us at Kianyaga Boys High School for the future. As we lay him to rest today at Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, we celebrate a gentle giant, who wanted and delivered nothing, but the best out of his students. His impact, together with his gallant team of teachers, remains a legacy in many sectors,” Gachagua said.

He also expressed his sympathies to the family and loved ones of the departed teacher.

“That is why laying him to rest was not only a painful moment for me, but also a time of reflection. I thank Mwalimu Kano Ndumbi. My deepest sympathies and that of my family to his Family, Relatives, Friends and former students with whom we cherish the life of this great man together. We pray that the Almighty God rests the soul of Mwalimu in Peace; may perpetual light shine upon him forever.”
