A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer was today arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for extorting a bribe.

A statement by EACC on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, indicated that its officers at the Central Regional Office in Nyeri arrested the suspect identified as Luke Nyasangah.

The anti-graft agency added that Nyasangah is a DCI Officer based at Ngano Police Station in Nyandaraua County.

EACC explained that they apprehended the DCI Officer after he asked for a Ksh10,000 bribe from a local who needed assistance to recover Ksh115,000 lost through M-Pesa fraud.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), through its Central Regional Office in Nyeri, on Wednesday morning arrested Luke Nyasangah, a DCI Officer based at Ngano Police Station, Nyandaraua County, for demanding Kes. 10,000 bribe from a local resident who had lost Kes, 115,000 in Mpesa to fraudsters, and needed police assistance to recover the funds,” EACC said in a statement.

The anti-graft agency said the DCI officer told the victim of the M-Pesa fraud that the bribe was necessary to facilitate the tracking of the fraudsters.

“The suspect told the complainant that the bribe was mandatory to facilitate tracking of the fraudsters. He has been put in custody at Charagita Police Post pending further processing,” EACC said.

Kasarani cop

The arrest in Nyandarua comes months after EACC nabbed another cop in Kasarani, Nairobi County for demanding Ksh30,000 to release two brothers.

EACC at the time said the officer identified as Paul Kamau Mbugua arrested two brothers on January 26, 2024, for an unknown offence but did not book them in the Occurrence Book (OB).

Mbugua demanded a Ksh30,000 bribe to release the duo leading the complainants to seek EACC’s intervention.

Following investigations, EACC officers cornered and arrested the police officer after receiving the demanded amount.

“The Commission received the complaint and conducted investigations leading to the officer’s arrest after receiving the demanded amount. He was escorted to Kilimani Police Station pending further processing at EACC Integrity Centre Police Station,” EACC noted.

The officer caused a scene during his arrest as he let out loud yells while resisting arrest. The whole drama was caught on video which trended on social media.

“Attempts by the suspect to resist arrest were unsuccessful. Detectives confiscated the suspect’s Taurus Revolver Pistol S/No. Q130360 and ammunition, which they later handed over to the OCS EACC Police Station,” EACC said in a statement.
