Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has officially declared Monday, August 29 a public holiday in eight areas that had deferred elections.

The areas include; Mombasa and Kakamega counties( where gubernatorial elections will be held), Kacheliba, Kitui Rural, Rongai and Pokot South constituencies(where parliamentary elections were postponed).

“Employers around the country are requested to release their employees who are registered voters in the listed electoral areas to enable them to vote,” he stated.

IEBC postpones election in eight areas

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had postponed elections in Mombasa and Kakamega counties after the ballot papers’ mix-up.

At the time, IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati explained that the suspension of the polls, which had been slated for a later date due to mistakes by the printer on respective ballot papers, was necessitated by alleged harassment and profiling of election officials.

“In view of the prevailing circumstances, the Commission has postponed the by-elections slated for 23rd August 2022, to a date to be announced through a gazette notice,” Chebukati said.

The polls were then postponed to Monday, August 29, 2022.

The commission proposed the date during a meeting with the candidates at the Bomas of Kenya on Monday, August 22.
