Education cabinet secretary (CS) George Magoha has issued statement following a viral video where a class eight pupil was allegedly assaulted by teachers for failing to score 400 marks.

In the video that since went viral, the pupil identified as Bravin Ochido alleged that two teachers, Paul Osogo and Maurine Otieno roughed him up for attaining poor marks.

At the time, Gem Sub-County police commander Charles Chacha confirmed the incident stating that a statement had been recorded from at least eight students who faced a similar incident.

The victim’s mother also echoed the police’s statement saying: “The first time I was informed of the caning that the learners undergo while in school, I was shocked. A teacher even stripped my son naked and caned before everyone,”

In his statement, CS Magoha castigated the two pledging that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will take swift action on them.

“It is totally against the law to apply any stick on a child as the law currently stands, my personal opinion notwithstanding,

“But it is savage to can a child like you are caning an animal, and anybody who did some teaching at any level should know that if a child has performed well and you want them to perform better, caning is not going to improve, it will just rinspire some rebellion on the child,” Magoha remarked.

CS Magoha urges police to ensure that the two face full force of the law

While issuing warning to other teachers, Magoha mandated the authorities to ensure that the two face the full force of the law.

So far, police have arrested the two in connection to the act and are awaiting pending arraignment in court on Monday, July 25 to answer for assault charges.
