The Atheists in Kenya Society has threatened to write to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) to investigate alleged atheist discrimination remarks made by outgoing Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua against Martha Karua.

The society claims the said utterances were made with the sole intent of discriminating against freedom of association by giving preference to atheists.

AIK says they strongly condemn Mutua’s words castigating Karua’s atheism during a UDA campaign rally.

“Je mtakubali mtu ambaye haamini kuna Mungu aingie katika uongozi wa nchi yetu?

(Will you allow someone who does not believe in the existence of God to be in government?” Mutua piqued.

In a statement, (AIK) President Harrison Mumia argued that Kenya is not a Christian nation but a pluralistic nation that accommodates people of various religious persuasion including atheists.

“The Atheists In Kenya Society (AIK) strongly condemns the careless, shameful, and discriminatory remarks made by Dr Alfred Mutua today during UDA campaigns.

“Kenya is not a Christian Nation. Kenya is a pluralistic nation consisting of people of various religious persuasions, and this includes atheists,” the statement read.

They consequently demanded an apology from Mutua however he did not respond saying that they will now pick up the matter with NCIC!

“We demand a public apology from Dr Alfred Mutua within 24 hours, failure to which we will raise the matter with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).”
