8 dead after 33-seater bus plunges into Mbagathi River
Eight people have been confirmed dead after a matatu they were travelling in plunged into Mbagathi River.
A police report revealed that the Saturday incident occurred when the 33-seater matatu lost control and plunged into the river killing eight people on the spot.
“This morning 18/05/24 around 10:00 am a PSV matatu plying Gataka Nairobi route lost control and plunged into Mbagathi river just before Cooperative University killing 8 people on the spot,” the police report stated.
Those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition. Following the unfortunate incident, police have directed motorists to use alternative routes due to heavy traffic.
“The rest were rescued by various ambulances and taken to nearby hospitals although in critical conditions,” the police report added.
The latest comes amid efforts to reduce the alarming rates of deaths on Kenyan roads.
According to statistics by NTSA, the number of road accidents reported in the country between January 1, 2024, and April 1, 2024, had risen compared to a similar period in 2023.
Since January, 7,198 Kenyans have been involved in road accidents, marking an increase of 1,908 compared to last year.
Among the 7,198 Kenyans, NTSA reveals that 1,189 died from road accidents, 3,316 were seriously injured and 2,693 suffered from minor injuries.
