Some 48 students from St.Augustine Kanyangi Boys and St.Bridgit Syomunyu Girls were on Sunday injured in a grisly road accident at Majengo area in the outskirts Kitui town.

The early morning accident occurred at Majengo estate village, near Kalundu river as the bus that was ferrying students from both schools in Kitui Rural Constituency to St.Ursula Girls Secondary school in Tungutu, Kyangwithya west in Kitui Central Constituency, lost control.

According to Mark Ndete who is the village administrator in Majengo, the 52-seater bus from St.Augustine Kanyangi Boys was avoiding a motorbike at the slopes of the river before it lost control, leading to its over-turning.

“There was a motorbike that was speeding as it approached the school bus from the opposite direction, and as the bus driver tried to avoid hitting the cyclist, the bus swerved off the road and lost control toppling over and down the hill before it capsized,” said the area village administrator.

The bus was reportedly taking students to St.Ursula Girls for a Students Council meeting, for Catholic sponsored schools before it came across the accident.

The casualties were taken to the County referral hospital where they are receiving medical attention.

No deaths were reported from the 48 injured students.

The incident comes barely a month after St.Bridgit Syomunyu Girls Secondary school bus was also involved in an accident as it was ferrying students to school, in the beginning of the new terming the new year.
