Two prisoners have died under unclear circumstances in the past two days in Nairobi.

In one of the incidences, a remandee in the Industrial Area was found dead on Wednesday, July 13, by the prison guards while conducting a head count.

The 26-year-old Peter Mwaniki, who is reported to have been epileptic, was in remand over a murder case.

“While conducting daily physical head count, the body of peter Mwaniki Wambura was found. He was a remandee of a murder case, court file number 13/2022,” a police report seen by K24 Digital read in part.

In 2019, Mwaniki was also accused of assaulting his girlfriend Annah Ndinda Makanga who had asked for their separation.

He was charged at Makadara Law Court for causing actual bodily harm to her.

Another prisoner dies

His death is a second one following the death of Peter Maingi Musyoki who was being detained at Kamiti Prisons.

Musyoki, who was charged in Machakos over the murder, died Tuesday, July 12, 2022, while receiving treatment at the prison hospital.

Apparently, Musyoki had received a pardon from President Uhuru Kenyatta under the Presidential Power of Mercy program, but was yet to be freed.

In another separate incident, a police officer attached to the Kiambaa Police Station in Eldoret pleaded not guilty at Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, July 13, 2022.

Constable Vincent Odhiambo is accused of the murder of Wycliff Owour within Kayole and his arrest was recommended by the Director of Public Prosecution on May 18, 2022.

He has been remanded at Industrial Area Remand and Allocation pending determination of his bail and bond term.
