World Cup: Scaloni breaks down during interview in emotional scene after Argentina’s defeat

The 2026 World Cup in North America has seen tears freely flowing for many different reasons. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni produced one of the tournament’s final emotional scenes when he abruptly ended his post-match press conference in tears.
The gaffer had just witnessed his side dethroned as world champions by Spain following a gruelling extra-time duel in New York on Sunday, July 19, 2026, and the emotional toll proved too much.
Visibly sobbing and struggling to articulate his thoughts, the Argentina World Cup-winning coach of 2022 reflected on his highly successful tenure in what felt like a farewell address to the nation.
“We tried until the very last moment to give our absolute maximum, both the coaching staff and the players. I think it is only fair that I take this time to think things over,” he reflected.
His side almost forced the clash to penalties despite playing with ten men following Enzo Fernandez’s dismissal in second-half stoppage time for a second yellow card.
Replicating Argentina’s success
“To keep going requires a whole host of things: resetting yourself completely and building a group like this all over again, which will be hard to ever replicate. And it hurts me to my very soul,” he added.
He also admitted he would be mulling over his future after leading Argentina for the last eight years, a tenure that included a World Cup trophy and now a runners-up finish.
“The truth is I have not talked to Leo Messi and the president, but I have a general idea of what I want to do. Fulfill the contract and then see what is next. I feel the need to think things over because I don’t know if it’s possible to achieve something this great ever again. I want to thank the president for giving me this opportunity,” he stated before emotion completely overtook him.
Scaloni originally took over the reins as a temporary caretaker manager following the Albiceleste’s dismal 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia under Jorge Sampaoli. He went on to guide the team through a historic era, earning Argentina its third star with its triumph in 2022.
Record slip away
Falling just one win short of a second consecutive World Cup title, Scaloni missed out on matching an 88-year-old record held by Vittorio Pozzo. The Italian manager led Italy to back-to-back titles in 1934 and 1938, remaining the only coach in tournament history to win it twice.
Scaloni’s current contract runs through December 2026. His historic run at the major final is as follows:
