Scaloni warns of complex title defence as Argentina targets back-to-back World Cup crowns

Argentina will not only enter the upcoming 2026 World Cup as defending champions but also as overwhelming pre-tournament favorites.
The Albiceleste (sky blue) are three-time world champions and boast their evergreen talisman, Lionel Messi. They arrive on the global stage having thoroughly dominated both South American and international football over the last few years.
Yet, head coach Lionel Scaloni remains fiercely grounded. He believes the task ahead is daunting, warning that the tournament will be an uphill battle as they seek to become rare back-to-back World Cup winners.
2022 win in Qatar
The former Argentine international previously guided the national team to the 2022 global title in Qatar following a thrilling, historic penalty shootout victory over France.
That triumph marked the dawn of a golden era under the gaffer, with a squad anchored by superstars like Messi, Emiliano Martínez, and Ángel Di María subsequently conquering the continent with consecutive Copa América titles.

“It will be a very complex and difficult World Cup. We have to prepare the players because what is coming is going to be tough; you cannot always win,” Scaloni told the Guardian. He was quick to address the immense pressure weighing on the title holders as they target a fourth global crown in North America.
It has been a meteoric rise for Scaloni. Having previously served as Jorge Sampaoli’s assistant during Argentina’s disappointing round-of-16 exit at the 2018 World Cup, he was initially handed the reins as an interim caretaker. The Argentine FA later confirmed him as permanent head coach, and he remarkably went on to clinch the sport’s ultimate prize during his very first World Cup tournament in charge.
Favourites tag and demands
While exuding quiet confidence in his current crop of players, the tactician openly acknowledged that in a tournament of this magnitude, the favourites tag carries zero weight once the whistle blows.
“This shirt is demanding. The fans want to see a team that plays good football on the pitch. Beyond that, we know that the best team does not always win,” concluded the coach.
As part of their preparations, the team edged Honduras 2-0 on Saturday night, June 6, 2026. with Messi among the players watching on after his return to the national team after an injury scare with his Inter Miami club.
They will begin their Group J campaign against Algeria on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, before taking on Austria and Jordan in the remaining group fixtures.
