The final score between Morocco and Norway was only 1-1, but the match generated far more discussion than most international friendlies.

Played just days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the encounter became a showcase of elite talent, tactical preparation and injury concerns.

While Brahim Diaz and Martin Ødegaard shared the goals, much of the post-match conversation centred on four players: Martin Ødegaard, Erling Haaland, Noussair Mazraoui and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.

Martin Ødegaard rescued Norway

Norway captain Martin Ødegaard once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most influential midfielders in international football.

Morocco took the lead through Brahim Diaz after an attacking move exposed gaps in Norway’s defence. The Real Madrid attacker finished confidently to put the Atlas Lions ahead and reward Morocco’s bright start.

For much of the match, Morocco looked capable of protecting the advantage. However, Norway’s patience eventually paid off.

In the second half, Ødegaard found space around the edge of the Moroccan defensive structure and converted Norway’s equaliser after a well-worked move involving Oscar Bobb.

The goal highlighted one of Ødegaard’s greatest strengths. Unlike traditional playmakers who remain deep, he constantly searches for pockets of space between midfield and defence, making him difficult to track.

Erling Haaland remains Norway’s biggest attraction

Although Erling Haaland did not score, he remained one of the most-watched players on the pitch.

Every touch from the Manchester City striker drew attention from fans and analysts eager to assess Norway’s chances at the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament will mark Norway’s first World Cup appearance since 1998, making Haaland one of the faces of the competition.

His movement occupied Morocco’s defenders throughout the match, often creating room for teammates such as Ødegaard and Bobb to operate in dangerous areas.

For Norway, Haaland represents more than goals. He symbolises the country’s return to football’s biggest stage after nearly three decades away.

Mazraoui injury concern raises alarm

One of the biggest talking points after the match involved Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui.

The defender was forced off before full-time after appearing to suffer an injury during play.

Although Moroccan officials had not immediately released a detailed medical report, the incident sparked concern because of Mazraoui’s importance to the team’s defensive organisation.

In elite football, injuries suffered shortly before major tournaments often become a source of anxiety because players have limited recovery time before competitive matches begin.

Morocco will be hoping the issue proves minor ahead of their World Cup campaign.

Ezzalzouli’s setback worries Morocco fans

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli also became a major talking point after leaving the match with an apparent injury concern.

The winger had earlier played an important role in Morocco’s opening goal by providing the assist for Brahim Diaz.

His pace and direct running repeatedly troubled Norway’s defence, making him one of Morocco’s most dangerous attacking outlets.

Seeing him leave the field naturally raised questions about his availability for the World Cup.

Medical teams typically assess such injuries through physical examination and imaging tests before determining whether rest, physiotherapy or additional treatment is required.

Why did this friendly mattered?

Most international friendlies are quickly forgotten.

Morocco versus Norway was different.

The match offered a glimpse of two ambitious World Cup teams, showcased the leadership of Martin Ødegaard, highlighted the star power of Erling Haaland and exposed the injury concerns surrounding Noussair Mazraoui and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.

As the World Cup approaches, those storylines may prove far more significant than the 1-1 scoreline itself.
