With the expanded 48-team format set to deliver more matches than ever before, the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises a flood of goals across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While the tournament guarantees increased scoring opportunities, predicting who will finish as the competition’s leading marksman remains a difficult task.

Several elite forwards and attacking stars are expected to challenge for the prestigious Golden Boot award, presented to the tournament’s highest scorer.

Frontrunners

Harry Kane (England)

England’s record scorer enters the tournament with 79 international goals from 113 matches and eight World Cup strikes to his name.

Since moving to Bayern Munich in 2023, Kane has continued his prolific scoring form in Germany. The experienced striker will be supported by a talented attacking cast that includes Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Eberechi Eze. If he tops the scoring charts, Kane would become the first player to win the Golden Boot on two separate occasions.

Kylian Mbappe (France)

The French captain heads into the tournament as one of the strongest candidates. Mbappe has already established himself among France’s greatest goalscorers, amassing 56 goals in 98 appearances while scoring 12 times in 14 World Cup matches.

The Real Madrid attacker has maintained remarkable consistency for both club and country, finding the net regularly over the past few seasons. Surrounded by creative talents such as Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Michael Olise, Mbappe has a realistic chance of claiming a second consecutive Golden Boot after winning the award in Qatar four years ago.

Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)

Spain’s Oyarzabal has emerged as a surprise contender following an outstanding run in front of goal. The forward has scored 25 times in 53 international appearances and has been particularly effective recently, netting 13 goals in his last 13 games for the national team.

The presence of creative stars such as Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams has helped elevate his performances, making him one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking weapons.

Erling Haaland (Norway)

Haaland’s international record remains extraordinary, with 55 goals in only 50 appearances for Norway.

The Manchester City striker reached the 50-goal international milestone at a remarkably young age and continues to terrorize defenses across Europe. Although Norway face a difficult group, Haaland’s ability to score against any opposition makes him a genuine Golden Boot contender.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Approaching his 39th birthday, Messi continues to demonstrate why he is regarded as one of football’s greatest players.

The Argentine legend has scored 117 goals for his country and has found the net 13 times in World Cup competition. Despite winning virtually every major honor available, the Golden Boot has never been added to his collection. His recent scoring exploits for both Argentina and Inter Miami suggest he could still challenge for the award.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

The all-time leading scorer in men’s international football remains a threat at the age of 40.

Ronaldo has amassed 143 goals for Portugal and continues to deliver consistently at international level. Under coach Roberto Martinez, he remains a central figure in Portugal’s attack, supported by creative talents including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceicao.

Ousmane Dembele (France)

Dembele enters the tournament after reinventing himself as a more clinical attacker.

While his international scoring numbers remain modest, the Frenchman has been prolific at club level, scoring heavily for Paris Saint-Germain over the last two seasons. Whether deployed centrally or in a wider role, Dembele possesses the quality to make a significant impact.

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Spain’s teenage sensation could make history if he finishes as the tournament’s leading scorer.

Still only 18, Yamal has already become one of the world’s most exciting attacking players. Although best known for creating chances, the Barcelona winger has also developed a reputation for scoring spectacular goals from distance. Winning the Golden Boot would make him the youngest recipient of the award.

Brazil’s Vinicius Junior may not boast the scoring statistics of some rivals, but his performances for Real Madrid have shown a growing ability to deliver goals consistently.

The winger has surpassed the 20-goal mark in each of the last five seasons for his club and remains one of the most dangerous attacking players in world football.

Previous Golden Boot winners

The World Cup’s top scorer award has been claimed by some of football’s greatest names over the decades. Recent winners include James Rodriguez (2014), Harry Kane (2018), and Kylian Mbappe (2022).

The 2026 edition now presents a new opportunity for the world’s leading forwards to etch their names into World Cup history by finishing as the tournament’s most prolific scorer.
