De Zerbi speaks
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as our new Men’s Head Coach on a long-term contract, subject to work permit,” Tottenham Hotspur announced.
De Zerbi Excited to Begin New Chapter
Speaking after his appointment, De Zerbi shared his enthusiasm about joining one of England’s most historic football institutions.
Roberto said:

“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world. In all my discussions with the Club’s leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear – to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters. I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it,” De Zerbi noted.
“Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season. I’m looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with these players to achieve that.” He added.
The Italian tactician is widely admired for his dynamic and possession-based style of football, which has earned him recognition across Europe. His arrival signals Tottenham’s intention to adopt a bold and attacking philosophy while improving their standing in the league.
Club Leadership Backs Their First Choice
Tottenham’s Sporting Director, Johan Lange, revealed that De Zerbi had long been the club’s preferred candidate and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver success. Sporting Director, Johan Lange, said: “Roberto was our number one target for the summer, and we are very pleased to be able to bring him in now.
“He is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football, and brings with him a wealth of experience at the highest level, including in the Premier League.”
His appointment is seen as a strategic move by Tottenham as they look to rebuild momentum and challenge more consistently both domestically and in European competitions.
Coaching Journey Built on Attractive Football
Before stepping into management, De Zerbi enjoyed a professional playing career that spanned nearly 15 years, making close to 300 appearances. Born in Brescia, Italy, he later transitioned into coaching in his home country, where he began developing the tactical identity that would define his career.
In June 2018, he took charge of Italian Serie A side Sassuolo, where he earned widespread praise for implementing an entertaining, attack-minded and possession-focused style of play that quickly gained attention across Europe.
His growing reputation led to a move to Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk in May 2021. During his time there, he guided the team into the UEFA Champions League group stage and lifted the Ukrainian Super Cup, marking the first major trophy of his managerial career.
Success across Europe
De Zerbi’s breakthrough in English football came when he joined Brighton & Hove Albion in September 2022. In his debut season, he achieved remarkable success by guiding the Seagulls to their highest-ever Premier League finish, securing European qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
He later moved to French Ligue 1 side Marseille, where his influence continued to grow. In the 2024/25 season, the club finished as league runners-up, earning qualification for the UEFA Champions League and further strengthening his reputation as one of Europe’s most progressive managers.
Tottenham supporters will now look forward to seeing how De Zerbi’s philosophy translates onto the pitch as the team aims to avoid relegation and restore consistency in performance.
