Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has hailed teenage defender Ayden Heaven for managing to contain the attacking threats of Chelsea forwards as the Red Devils held their nerves to win 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

With Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez suspended, head coach Michael Carrick was forced to start with Heaven in the heart of United’s defence alongside Noussair Mazroui, as Matthijs de Ligt is still sidelined.

In partnership with Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, the defenders delivered a huge win for Manchester United in the race for next season’s UEFA Champions League football.

Rio hails Heaven

Following the impressive display from Heaven, whom Manchester United bought at a lower price from Arsenal, Ferdinand said;

”The recruitment has taken a battering at Manchester United over the last 10 years and rightly so. But we need to shout out…Ayden Heaven – £1m. Still lots to learn but called upon once again and delivered!” Rio took to his Facebook page on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

On his part, Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick described the attitude his players showed in Saturday’s triumph over Chelsea, United’s first at Stamford Bridge in more than six years, as absolutely immense.

Matheus Cunha got the only goal of the Saturday-night clash in the British capital to move the Reds a step closer to a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

But it did not come easy. United came into the meeting with a fellow European hopeful needing to respond to Monday’s home defeat to Leeds, and without four senior centre-backs.

While Leny Yoro also got a fresh knock, Carrick had to name a new-look backline at Stamford Bridge.

Centre-backs were magnificent

“I thought Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui coming in were incredible, Ayden being such a young age and Noussair not really playing centre-back in a back four. I have to give the coaching staff a lot of credit on getting the boys ready for that. I thought the boys put a magnificent performance in tonight,” Carrick said.

On players’ attitude, Michael Carrick said: “I’m really proud of everyone, the players, the staff, the supporters. It was one of those nights where things came together. There were some challenges leading up to the game, the suspensions, the injuries, Leny [Yoro] pulling out quite late, and having to adapt. There were all sorts of different things. I thought the attitude of the players was just absolutely immense tonight and we’re delighted, for so many reasons. It was a big game, we knew that coming into it, with the league position, we knew that. [For us] as a team [as well] really, wanting to come and win big games, important games, and the boys responded to it so well.”
