McCarthy explains why there is cloud of optimism around Harambee Stars
By Luke Oluoch, April 1, 2026Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has explained why Kenyans can afford to dream despite the team’s third-place finish in the concluded FIFA Series tournament held in Rwanda.
Kenya finished in third position in the four-nation tournament after thrashing Grenada 3-0 on Monday, March 30, 2026. The result came after a penalty loss to Estonia, which eliminated the team from a final berth.
Reflections
The conclusion of the tournament provides the technical bench with more time to rethink their strategies based on data collected from the players who featured. The gaffer hailed the new additions he sampled, specifically singling out defender Frank Odhiambo, whom he termed the most outstanding player in what was his debut for the national team.

With the focus now shifting toward preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), McCarthy revealed his elation with several players who earned their first minutes in national team colours.
“I have been happy with the debutants; most of them have been outstanding. Frank was one of the best players over the two games. Zech was very positive in offensive play. He has been a breath of fresh air and a good addition. Clarke should have had one of the easiest goals to score, but unfortunately, he couldn’t get it.
He said after Kenya jetted back into the country on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

The games followed after the FKF moved to convene some eligible players in the European league, and McCarthy believes their inclusion of such stars is just what the doctor ordered for the national team.
What Harambee Stars need
“When we can get players with better technical quality who make simple things look good, that is what the national team needs. It’s good for the players around them and can inspire others.”
Despite having a number of players sidelined by injuries, McCarthy is hopeful of having a more balanced and well-equipped side for the assignments ahead.
“All this gives us positive vibes and reasons to believe. When we get the likes of Zak Vyner, Daniel Anyembe, and Joseph Okumu back, it gives us a lot of quality options and top players. With the things we hope to achieve, Kenyans have a lot to look forward to, and we hope that with this squad, we can continue in the right direction,” he explained.
