Zech Obiero speaks on Harambee Stars debut and Tranmere loan move

Harambee Stars offensive midfielder Zech Obiero has described his debut with the Kenyan team at the ongoing FIFA Series in Kigali, Rwanda, as a proud moment and a dream come true.

Obiro marked his arrival at the national team with a stunning assist to Ryan Ogam despite Harambee Stars losing 5-4 to Estonia in their FIFA Series opener on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

Obiero is among the notable diaspora players of Kenyan origin, whom the Football Kenya Federation, led by Vice President McDonald Mariga have managed to lure into the national team.

Memorable debut

Speaking to the Federation ahead af the Monday, March 30, 2026, third-place playoff at the FIFA Deries against Grenada, Obiero revealed that donning the national team colours has always been his boyhood dream.

”It is a dream come true, I have always wanted to play for Kenya since I was a little boy, it is a proud moment, I thank God for the opportunity, and hopefully, many more to come,” Obiero noted.

As the country prepares to host the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations ( 2027 AFCON), the latest transfers involving Collins Sichenje, Amos Wanjala, Zech Obiero and Jack Ong’anya underline the steady rise of Kenyan talent on the international stage and the growing confidence European clubs have in players from the country.

For Obiero, his loan move to Tranmere earlier in the year has re-ignited confidence in him as he eyes an AFCON call-up by head coach Benni McCarthy in 2027.

Tranmere move

Zech Obiero, 21, joined Tranmere Rovers on loan from Leyton Orient in England. The loan move is designed to give the midfielder valuable game time and exposure, allowing him to gain experience and sharpen his influence in the middle of the park. Obiero’s versatility and work rate could play a key role for Tranmere as he seeks to make the most of the opportunity.

”It is so important, you’ve got to play games when you are younger, find out what kind of player you are, what works and what doesn’t work for you. I think Tranmere is making me understand what kind of player I am.” The midfielder added.

At the national team level, Zech Obiero has his focus on cementing his spot in the Harambee Stars squad as the team navigates challenging international assignments.
